Summer Sun Protection

*Some press samples featured. Ingredients are not listed in any order.

Fried eggs. Those are really good. Fried beans? Yea, not bad with Mexican food. But fried skin? Not sure anyone's a fan except from Hannibal Lector. So let's do ourselves a favor and not to turn into tasty tasty morsels for the cannibals that are hiding amongst us.

I know that sun protection is more than quelling the temptation to be eaten and I know that cancer is no joke so I slap on that SPF to ward off my neighbor's teeth as well as skin damage. Like my skincare needs, my suncreen desires have surpassed the basic levels of necessity and once again, I've been on the path to skincare evolution.

Banana Boat Baby SPF 60 - Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB Protection

I get allergic reactions to sunscreen and for years, this has been my go to. I don't get rashes or boils but I also don't get anything sophisticated. It's thick and gets gross after a long day but it works and it's $10. Like Britney, I've been wanting more but you know...from my sunscreen.

Ingredients: homosalate, octinoxate, octisalate, titanium dioxide
Selling points: tear-free, fragrance free, ultra gentle (what does that even mean...)

Ombrelle Kids SPF 60* - Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB Protection

Parsol use to give me awful rashes but this did not. I made the switch since...my Banana Boat had expired like...a year ago. I'm not sure it absorbs any faster than other sunscreens. It sits on the skin much like others but the formula is a touch lighter than Banana Boat.

Ingredients: octsalate, titanium dioxide, drometrixole trisiloxane (mexoryl XL) avobenzone (Parsol 1789), octocrylene, terephthalylidene dicampoh sulfonic acid (mexoryl SX)
Selling points: waterproof, hypoallergenic, fragrance/colorant free, quick absorption

Dermalogica After Sun Repair*

Like I mentioned, David will get burnt in the sun and there are times when I burn myself in the kitchen or fail to apply sunscreen onto a patch of body so this will help. It's coming with me to Saskatoon and the ingredients on this thing sound amazing. I tried it on a minor kitchen burn and it did help me heal quickly. You can even use it to calm post waxed skin! In general, I'm a big fan of Dermalogica's ethic.

Ingredients: aloe vera leaf juice, cucumber extract, prickly ash, clove extract, liquorice, mugwort, lavender, cucumber, chamomile, yucca and algae extract, alnus firmifolia fruit.
Selling points: did you see the ingredient list? no artificial fragrances, colors or parabens

If I could coat my entire face in SPF all year round I would. Foundations with SPF just dont have high enough protection for me to feel comfortable relying solely on them in the summer. Since I tend to go with less face products anyways, I'm trying to find something that will fill my SPF needs. Extra Jenn Points (purchasing power = zero) if it has some tint. (I'm still trying out some Korean BB creams which are all full of SPF yaaayyzz).

Missha All Around Safe Block Essence Sun SPF 45 PA +++

A great sunscreen for the face. This has a lotion consistency and doesn't sit heavily on the skin. I've been reaching for it every morning as my moisturizer and SPF since it has moisturizer ingredients.

Ingredients: can't tell which are the sun screen ones sorry, liquorice, cucumber extract, wtich hazel, aloe vera leaf juice, morus alba (moisturizes)
Selling points: nourishes and moisturizes skin while protecting, no mineral oils,

Dermalogica Ultra Sensitive Tint SPF 30* - Broad Spectrum UVA Protection

I was excited to try this but the tint was too dark and too pink (there's only one tint). It also sat really heavily on my skin and made me a bit oilier than normal. I think this would be great for people with dry skin but oily skinned individuals would find this a bit too much. There are a lot of 'safer' ingredients in this since it comes from Dermalogica's UltraCalming line which is designed for skin that is sensitive or prone to redness.

Ingredients: titanium dioxide, grape seed and green tea extract, Ultra Calming Complex
Selling points: humectants prevent moisture loss, antioxidents prevent aging, great for sensitive or resurfaced skin, tinted with earth minerals, no artificial fragrances or colors.

Lancome Bienfait Multi-Vital SPF 30 - UVA/UVB Protection

Before I switched over to the Missha, I had been using this in the mornings. It is a thicker cream and great for moisturizing in the wintertime. I can't say I've seen any of the 'evens skin tone' claims realized but it works well enough and I'm glad for the SPF protection even during the winter.

Ingredients: avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene
Selling points: 24hr hydration, evened skin tone
