Memebox Special Box #24 Brightening Skincare* Unboxing and Subscription Box Discussion

Memeboxes (pronounced "me me", and not "meem") has been kicking around for a while. I was very excited that a subscription box dedicated itself to Korean products but I never actually bought one. In general, I don't think subscription boxes are where I want to spend my money but the pay-per-use feature of Memebox gives it more flexibility. I was sent Special Box #24 Brightening Skincare to review.

Box #24* contains 5 full sized items geared towards brightening your skin. There is an eye mask, spot remover, a toner (of sorts), an essence and a face mask. The box value is stated at $139 but the box retailed for $23 with $7 worldwide shipping and can still be purchased online.

Dermahouse Perfect Whitening Moisture Mask ($29, 120ml) uses niacinamide to treat red, coarse and uneven skin. You can use it as a wash-off mask or as an overnight pack.

I tried this one two nights in a row and my skin was noticablye smoother and softer in the morning. This reminds me of how my Sulwhasoo Vitalizing Masks works.

Yufit Eon Wheat-Germ 97 Essence ($36, 50ml) will replenish moisture, prevent wrinkles, whiten and brighten your skin. Apply this after toner, patting it on your skin to help with absorption.

Slightly vicious, like a very light facial oil, this went on easily enough. Can't say much about it since I haven't used it that long.

Cleosis All in One Water Shining Finisher ($39, 45ml) combines a toner, essence, moisturizer and primer for firmer, more hydrated, brighter skin with evened skin texture and reduced wrinkles. Apply after cleansing and before makeup.

It's lightly perfumed and has a slight shimmer when applied.

Finco Solution Spot ($42, 25ml) targets red, unven spots or emergency breakouts (which is great because I have a massive zip on my chin as I'm typing this...). It soothes, reduces reddness and acne scars.  It's a clear gel which active ingredient is Agrimonia eupatoria which is suppose to heal skin eruptions and acne (says Google).

No stinging when applied onto my spot and I've used it two nights in a row. My huge pimple did decrease in size the next day (score)!

Ispren Magic Eye Solution Wise Patch ($3) is suppose to treat dark circles and sagging under eye kins. These are jelly fish like gel pads that sit under your eyes and over your cheekbones.

It has a pleasantly weird squishy texture and stays in place quite well for the suggested 20-40 mins. There was some very slight stinging when I used it.

If you'd like, you can use the code: OCB63L for $5.00 off any order. For transparency,  I'm not sure if use of the code benefits me in any way but it was one Memebox gave to me to use in my post.

In general, the spot solution and the whitening mask are my picks from this box.

On Subscription Boxes

The true value of the box lies in the effects of the products and that's hard to predict when your buying a box blind. I wouldn't mind buying the individual products in the box at full price if I knew they worked. $30 isn't too expensive a gamble for this so if even one thing (aside from the eye mask) worked out, it would be a win and since two performed nicely so far, I would have gotten more value than what I had paid. Subscription boxes are well priced for the amount of products you get but I've rarely seen a unboxing where I've loved more than the retail value's worth of products. In general makeup boxes are less risky than skincare, where results matter more.

Memebox's pay-per-use model is nice since it doesn't lock me in and allows me to be more selective with my product choices. In general, I still prefer making specific purchasing decision and not bulk buying boxes with random assortment of things hoping I might love them. I'd also rather buy items from brands that I'm familiar with and I hope Memebox (and other sub boxes) includes more recognizable brands in their boxes. Overall, I'm still not entirely sold on sub boxes and haven't bought a Memebox yet though the Iope Box came close to being a first purchase. But even then, I didn't want everything in the box and I'd rather not pay for things I don't want.

What are your thoughts on subscription boxes?
