Empty Palette: Z vs Make Up For Ever

Already a fan of depotting, and now almost overrun with eyeshadows, I'm always in need of empty palettes to store my outrageous mass. I've solely relied on Z palettes so far. Initially I considered this a great "travel solution" but now that I'm no longer deluding myself about travel solutions for makeup, this format could do with an improvement and I've found my next level depotting power-up in the Make Up For Ever empty palettes ($16).

The requirement for the switch was simple. I had three Z palettes which took up more space than if I used larger palettes. I might be able to condense three Z's down somehow. The MUFE palettes are larger in all dimensions (though only slightly in height) than the XL Z ($28), therefore it contains more eyeshadows.

Made out of medium thickness sheet metal, the MUFE palettes seems less sturdy than the Z which is constructed out of thick rigid cardboard. There is no window to view your colors and the paint can get scratched up. But with the inclusion of a thick plastic cover (which goes over your shadows as a color shield) and a thick foam insert (which goes over the plastic), the palette is quick hefty and eyeshadows are very protected once everything is inside.

The foam inserts eliminates any space between the shadows and the lid, reducing the ability for anything to move. Not that it needs to hold the shadows down per-say since the magnet is much stronger than in the Z.

Though it would be nice to have a window and if the paint didn't chip, the truth is that I don't need my empty palettes to be all that portable. Like previously mentioned, I don't travel often and I don't use much makeup when I do, so palettes are purely about efficiency of storage. I like how large these are and I really like the foam insert in case I do travel. These are cheaper than the XL($28), L ($20) and M($17) Z palettes!

I'm looking forward to getting more of these and making the full switch over. I've already given away one of my Z palettes to my cousin and might keep one just in case. But in general, I'm probably going to sell them.

Other tidbits of information:
- MAC refill shadows won't stick to the MUFE (nor the Z) unless you remove the attached magnet. If you had depotted from the plastic casing then you may need to stick a metal round on the bottom.
- Unlike the Z, it does not come with metal rounds.
