Well the seasonal "jenn-skin freak out" has been upon us and I feel like I'm through the worst of it (fingers crossed)but the recovery period is still a little dicy. The areas around my nose and chin have been amazingly clogged and at one point, started to re-inact not-so-fond memories of my high school years. Nothing is quite as reminiscent of youth than large white heads and under the skin pimples.
I would have continued using the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo but it started to look a little weird as it came out of the tube. Dermalogica's Breakout Control* ($60CDN, 30ml) has been the treatment of choice lately. This is gentle enough to use multiple times a day under other skincare and the gel formula contains anti-bacterial agents, helps control oil production and doesn't dry out the skin. The primary agents are Lactobacillus Ferment (to get rid of bacteria), Zinc Sulfate and Tea Tree Oil.
Like the Effaclar Duo this has taken some time to get rid of the problem. I'm still trying to clear out the sebum around my chin but I've only been using this for a few weeks. It definitely isn't drying even when used twice a day but I have yet to see an decrease in oil product. Its OK on its own but I've been able to really boost its effectiveness when I started pairing it with the Viva Skincare Amaze Exfoliating Gel.
Ingredients: Water/Aqua/Eau, PEG-8, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Lactobacillus Ferment, Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate, Zinc Sulfate, Colloidal Silver, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Polysorbate 20, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Lavandula Hybrida Oil, Aminomethyl Propanol, Phenoxyethanol, Limonene, Linalool, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)
The way the Amaze Exfoliating Gel sloughs my skin off is so very satisfying. Actually seeing balls of skin on my hands and face sounds like it would be gross but being able to remove those first few dead layers of skin cells has allowed my serums and the Breakout Control to sink in. I was using Breakout Control without much exfoliation for the first little while but when I paired it with the Amaze Gel (used about 2x a week) my white heads seemed to clear at a better rate.
I'm going to continue sticking to this duo during the season since the combo seems to better than the sum of its parts. I'm hoping things will clear things up soon, the chin area is still sort of bumpy and the pores around the nose are pretty large. Its amazing how self conscious you can feel when your skin isn't perfect.
