Sephora Face the Day: Full Face Brush Set and Gold Den Brush Set review comparison

Brush sets are to makeup, what Bulk Barn is to my food pantry, a great way to pick up a lot of something for a decent price. These are especially great when you don't have a lot of brushes to begin with, not exactly a problem I have. Sephora offers more than a few options and two even newer options just popped into stores.

Sephora Gold Den Brush Set review

Limited Edition Gold Den Brush Set* ($65CDN):
- Powder Brush
- Angled Brush
- All Over Shadow Brush
- Smudge Brush
- 220mm x 135mm pouch

Just look at this thing. If the teal pouch doesn't get to you, at least the giraffe print will. A gorgeous design but I wish the brushes were softer and not so huge. The bristles are not scratchy but they are also not the softest. The shadow brush is much too big for my lid-estate. The angled brush is good for blush application but a bit too large for precise contour work for my face. On the plus side, the Powder brush is quite dense and can pick up powder from one of my stiffest, most unswatchable blushes. The smudge brush is a good size for lower lash line work but is a bit too full for extreme precision. In general, if you have a larger face, you might not experience the same size issues that I have.

Face the Day: Full Face Brush Set* ($61CDN, $119 Value):
- Powder brush
- Foundation brush

- Large Shadow brush

- Large Brow brush

- Smudge brush
- 0.04 oz Contour Eye Pencil 12hr Wear Waterproof
- 10cm x 1cm x 19.5cm clutch

These set offers most of all you'd need for a full face, except perhaps a lip brush (I don't use a lip brush but I know a few bloggers that do). Generally, all your bases are covered and the hairs are very soft on the face. The powder brush has good density and, like the Gold Den Powder brush, was able to pick up color from one of my unswatchable stiff blushes (but the Gold Den Powder Brush was a bit better since it was shorter and slightly more stiff). That brow and eye brush though, are too large for my lid and brow-estate. The smudge brush offers good density and again, is good for lower lash line work. It has a slimmer profile than the Gold Den version.

Though the Face the Day set has less visual appeal, the brushes are noticeably softer on the face and have a smaller profile in comparison to the Gold Den set. Both sets have quite large brush profiles in general, with the shadow brushes being more than ample (too ample) for my lid-estate. Note the differences in the width and lengths of the common brushes as well. If I had to choose, I prefer the feel of the Face the Day set overall (but my heart is really calling out to the teal and giraffe design *shakes fist*). These aren't bad starter sets in general and might be worth considering but with the success of the Real Techniques brush sets, I would be lying if I didn't say there was some good competition out there.
