I'm still on the whitening and brightening train so testing out The Body Shop's new Moisture White range seemed almost necessary. This range combines the ingredients of Shiso (Perilla leaves), Vitamin C and Liquorice to prevent melanin related pigmentation, increase skin luminosity and even skin tone. Each item in the line is suitable for all skin types.
The Body Shop's Moisture White Shiso Brightening Serum* ($36CDN for 30ml) is a lightweight serum that helps even tone and provide moisture. It provides 12 hour soft skin and contains aloe vera. It's supposed to leave a non-sticky protective film over the face.
The serum has a light milky spreadable texture that glides on smoothly. It does leave a protective film but it can be slightly sticky. The pump bottle makes application easy and I use this on it's own for days when I'm staying in. It seems to do well enough by itself for my combination skin and has not clogged my pores.
The Body Shop's Moisture White Shiso Moisture Cream* ($30CDN for 50ml) is an easily absorbed oil-free moisturizer. This is used over the serum and will produce more translucent, luminous skin.
I was a little surprised that this product does not have SPF but if you are using the whole Shiso line, the BB Cream does have SPF so it might have been a conscious choice on the part of the brand. I spoke to a SA from The Body Shop and she said there were sunscreen ingredients in the cream but it's not labelled on the bottle.
The cream has a slightly thick consistency, like that of a lightweight sunscreen, but it still smoothes easily onto the face. It also has a light sunscreen scent which is not overpowering and fades after application. It was just a little too heavy on my face and it didn't seem to absorb that well. I could always tell I had it on. I think this would be really good for people with dryer skin.
In General
I tried to do some research on Shiso but nothing really came up during my lit search. I also searched under the term Perilla but didn't find anything worthwhile. I've used these for about 4 weeks now and I though my skin hasn't gotten any brighter, I don't think it has gotten any darker either. I do think it helped even my skin tone slightly so I am going to continue using them to see if further results develop. The PR information I received suggest that 2 weeks is all you need to see results but that was for people using the whole line completely for two weeks.
For those of you concerned about silicons, both products contain some silicone derivatives. They also contain some parabens and I've noticed that Aloe Vera is located low in the ingredient list. Squalane is higher up for the serum and there is some evidence to support the moisturizing abilities of Squalene. In general, I'm enjoying the serum more than the cream.
If you want something to work quickly this probably won't be it but if you are looking for something that will even your skin tone gently, this is promising so far.
